Black & Gold Game
Long Beach State fans get a preview of this year’s basketball teams at the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage.
Both basketball programs at Long Beach State go into the 2009-10 season looking to improve on last year’s performance.
The women’s program, under the guidance of new head coach Jody Wynn, is a senior laden team looking to shock the conference after a sub par performance last season. Even though the young ladies made numerous turnovers today, they all look fit and trim and ready to battle for a conference championship.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t do a better job of taking care of the basketball; it’s something we’re going to have to work on…, [but] we are going to use the next three weeks and the scrimmages to get a lot better”, said Wynn.
On the men’s side, head coach Dan Monson looks to take a young team to the NCAA tournament after a moderately successful season last year. The current team already looks vastly improved, and appears to be ready for a non-conference schedule that some rate the strongest in the nation.
“I’m excited in that everything we tried to do in practice was implemented…, but I was disappointed in our consistency, especially defensively,” Monson said.
Both teams have their first game of the regular season in mid November. The women will take on Prairie View A&M on November the 13th, while the men battle Alaska-Anchorage during homecoming on the 14th.
