The Long Beach State women’s basketball team left everything on the court on their way to an opening season victory, 76-68, against the ladies from Prairie View A&M.
The team’s spirited play really energized their fans and brought them to their feet on more than one occasion.
First year head coach Jody Wynn was pleased with the way her team performed.
“If we had lost that game, we could have been satisfied inside because the effort was amazing. We just played together as a team disciplined and managed the clock well.”
Karina Figueroa‘s return to the starting line up, out last season due to a foot injury, paid huge dividends. The senior point guard led the team in scoring (20 points) while dishing out 10 assists.
“I wasn’t really sure how much of an impact I was going to be. I just took whatever [they] gave me.”
Several additional players had outstanding performances. Guard Lauren Sims chipped in 20 points, post player Whitney Fields ended up with 12 points, while swingman Ashley Bookman grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The 49ers return to the Walter Pyramid on Monday night (16th) to face LMU. The Lions are one of the better California mid major programs so another spirited battle can be expected.
