Karina Figueroa’s 24 points is not enough as LBSU’s women’s basketball team loses a tight one to the Cal

Box Score

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team made a final charge to close the game but it was not enough as they lose a hard fought game to the Cal Bears 80-71.

As an indication how close this game was, both teams shot an identical 42.9% from the field, each team had 23 defensive rebounds and 7 steals, and virtually identical foul calls (20-19 in Cal’s favor).  However, Cal had a plus 6 advantage on the offensive boards and 3 fewer turnovers, which led to Cal’s 7 more shots and 9 point scoring advantage.

Karina Figueroa once again led the 49ers (4-8) with 24 points and was a perfect 7 for 7 from the line.

Two other Long Beach players had career nights in scoring.  Combo guard Melanie Lisnock knocked down 17 while forward Tipesa Moorer threw in 10.

Cal (5-4) was led by DeNesha Stallworth’s 19 points and Talia Caldwell’s 10 rebounds.

Long Beach State returns home on January 2nd when they face UCR in both team’s conference opener.

Quotes from the game:

Long Beach State head coach Jody Wynn:

“They’re a talented team.  They’re big and strong, and their guards are very quick to the ball.”

“We battled, we hung tough, we might’ve lost some games but I think our kids still believe we can win.  If we didn’t schedule these people we would’ve never known if we could play with them.”

“We scheduled USC and Cal and Oregon, teams like this, because if we can compete with them and learn how to compete with kids that are jumping out of the gym like the Cal kids, that’s going to help us come conference play and get us mentally and physically tough.  I wanted them to be challenged both mentally and physically this preseason and I think we learned a lot and we got better. … And that’s the important thing because preseason is played to get ready for March and that conference tournament.”

Long Beach State’s foward Tipesa Moorer:

“Even though we were undersized and disadvantaged, we still did everything that we could to try and win.”

Long Beach State guard Lauren Sims:

“I just wasn’t feeling it like I usually am. And I think when that happens I just have to make sure I am giving in other ways.”

Cal head coach Joanne Boyle:

“We just tried to play uptempo and get them out of rhythm and not let them run their stuff in quarter-court, because they are very good when they do and they are comfortable. So we had to play a little more uptempo tonight, and I thought was to our benefit tonight.”

“We did get some turnovers out of trapping, which gets some easy baskets for us. I thought that Long Beach did a good job of staying with the stuff that they do. They played with us the whole game. It wasn’t like it became a 30-point game or anything. They are going to be a good team.”
