Beach sweeps UCI

Women’s Game – Box Score
LONG BEACH – The Long Beach State women’s basketball team recovered from a slow start as it erupted for 47 points in the second half to run away with a 67-55 victory over UC Irvine in Big West Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
The 49ers improved to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the Big West, while UCI fell to 4-12, 1-3 BWC.
The Beach shot 42.9 percent from the field and went 5-for-8 from behind the arc. LBSU was also 20-of-24 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Anteaters, 37-32.
Senior Karina Figueroa led Long Beach State with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Classmate Ally Wade also had a solid all-around performance with 10 points, seven boards, four assists and two steals, while junior Ashley Bookman chipped in a career-high tying 10 points.
Men’s Game – Box Score
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Casper Ware scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to help Long Beach State overcome a four-point halftime deficit en route to a 55-53 Big West Conference win at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday.
Ware made 5-of-9 shots after the break and 6-of-12 in the game, including a crucial jump shot with 1:34 to play to give The Beach (7-9, 1-2 Big West) a 55-53 lead.
“No kid is working harder than (Ware) is,” coach Dan Monson said. “He made some big shots be he had some big defensive plays too.”
LBSU held UCI (8-8, 2-2 Big West) scoreless for the rest of the way as the Anteaters missed four shots after Ware’s basket including three on one possession. Michael Hunter (10 points) had a basket waved off at the buzzer allowing The Beach to win its first conference game of the year.
