Bill King, long time women’s volleyball booster, made the road trip with the team to the University of Texas. He is not only an active booster, but he is also the creator of the “Spikers Newsletter”, a weekly publication focusing on Long Beach State’s outstanding women’s volleyball program. Bill was gracious enough to write a short diary highlighting the trip and his thoughts on the team’s performance.
Thursday 9/2/10
Left Long Beach Late – Fog prevented us from leaving on time putting us 45 minutes behind schedule – Arrived in Phoenix, but had to run to catch connecting flight with about 2 minutes to spare -Temperature in Long Beach was 78, Texas a cool 95 – The girls arrived at their hotel and took the rest of the day to rest and study – All seemed well in 49er Land
Friday 9/3/10
Heavy thunderstorms in the morning, but just hot and humid by game time – Our girls came out a little slow in the 1st set,
but soon took control and pulled away by the end – In the 2nd set, I think we got a little too comfortable and started to make a lot of ball handling errors – Florida A&M played a slow sloppy game and took us out of tempo – We came back but just a little too late letting the set get way – After the break we set the tone and carried the next 2 sets with tough serves and great defense – Match over – Stuck around and watched Illinois control Texas with a 3 set sweep – No. 5 showed no. 2 how to execute a great game plan – Tomorrow we have to play equally as well
Another hot, humid day – Game is at 6:30 PM – Game Time: the whole ball of wax was thrown at us with a large crowd, loud band, plenty of cheer leaders, vocal students… decimal level was high - Our girls came out a little tentative and the youth of the squad was evident – After losing the first 2 sets with a lot of unforced errors, LBSU came back with some momentum – We played well and forced Texas out of system and took the next 2 sets to force a game 5 – The 5th set has a lot to do with momentum, and unfortunately we let them get off to the better start – Fighting back we came up short – Our young team represented themselves well against no. 2 Texas and showed that they can, and will compete at a High level.
